Who Can Vote in Local Elections?

Local elections have different eligibility rules to general elections. You may be able to vote even if you can't vote in national elections.

You can vote if you are:

An Irish citizen, OR
A British citizen, OR
An EU citizen (other than Irish or British), OR
A non-EU citizen who is ordinarily resident in Ireland

You must also be 18 years or older on or before polling day.

Residency requirement

You must be ordinarily resident in the local electoral area where you wish to vote. If you've moved recently, you need to update your registration to your new address.

Unlike general elections, non-Irish citizens who are resident in Ireland can vote in local elections.

How to Register

Follow these simple steps to make sure you're registered to vote.

Check if you're already registered

Visit the official Register of Electors website and search for your name. You may already be on the register from a previous address.

Complete the registration form

If you're not registered, or your details have changed, you can download and complete the appropriate form from checktheregister.ie. You'll need to fill in your personal details, PPS number, and current address.

Forms are available for new registrations, change of address, and change of name or other details.

Send your form to the local authority

Print and sign the completed form and send it to your local authority's Franchise Section. For Drogheda Rural, this is Louth County Council.

You'll receive your polling card

Once registered, you'll receive a polling information card before the election with details of your polling station and when to vote. Bring ID with you on the day.

Deadline

You can apply to be added to the supplement to the register at any time, even close to election day.

What to bring

A form of ID (driving licence, passport, or public services card) and proof of address may be required.

Where to vote

Your polling station will be listed on your polling information card, usually close to your home.
