What is the pending elector list?

The pending elector list is a waiting list for people who will be old enough to vote in the future. Your local authority holds your details and moves you onto the live electoral register automatically when you reach 18.

Who can pre-register

  • You are aged 16 or 17, and
  • You are ordinarily resident in Ireland

When you turn 18

Your local authority can then move you to the live electoral register, so you'll be able to vote from your 18th birthday onwards.

How to Pre-register

Follow these steps to add your details to the pending elector list.

1

Download the pending elector form

Visit checktheregister.ie and download the form for adding your details to the pending elector list.

2

Complete the form

Fill in your personal details, PPS number, date of birth and current address. Make sure your date of birth is correct, as this is how the local authority knows when to move you to the live register.

3

Send it to your local authority

Print and sign the completed form and send it to your local authority's Franchise Section. For Drogheda Rural, this is Louth County Council.

Louth County Council, Franchise Section, County Hall, Millennium Centre, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 KFW6.

4

You're added automatically at 18

Once you're on the pending elector list, your local authority will move you to the live electoral register when you reach 18. You'll then receive a polling information card before elections in your area.

What you'll need

Your PPS number, date of birth and current address. A form of ID may be requested by the local authority.

Residency

You must be ordinarily resident in Ireland. If you move, update your details so you're registered in the right area when you turn 18.

Get ahead of your 18th

Pre-registering now means you'll be ready to vote from the very first election after your birthday.
